WORLD-RANKED MIXED MARTIAL ARTISTS TO COMPETE ON CHICAGO CARD
On Saturday, November 8, the Ironheart Crown will return to the UIC Pavilion in Chicago. The show is the oldest mixed martial arts event in the city and it has long been known for featuring world-class talent. As an affiliate promotion for the American Fight League, the upcoming show will be featuring some of the parent organization's top contracted fighters.
Widely regarded as the number one female MMA fighter in the world, Tara LaRosa (15-1), will face Roxanne Modafferi (12-4), also ranked in the world top ten. In 2007, Modafferi was victorious in Japan's K-GRACE women's openweight tournament. Both women carry deeper resumes than the more popular Gina Carano who has recently garnered attention as a female fighter through her network television exposure.
In the men's division, MMA Weekly's number 8 ranked featherweight in the world, Raphael Assuncao (11-1) will face Joe Pearson (30-11-1) who has won all of his victories by either knockout or submission. Pearson also carries the record for having more documented wins by triangle choke than any other fighter in the world.
And heading up the local talent, Chicago's own Hurt Fighter, Gideon Ray (15-10-1) will face Juan Magana (6-0) of Hammond, Indiana. Ray gained fame as a participant in the "Ultimate Fighter" reality TV show, earning him several subsequent bouts in the Ultimate Fighting Championship and the International Fight League. Despite several recent losses, he retains his reputation as one of Chicago's most dynamic fighters.
Though much less experienced, his opponent Juan Magana remains undefeated with all but one of his victories by knockout or submission. Magana is young and seems to be following in the footsteps of his coach, WEC World Bantamweight Champion, Miguel Torres.

Ironheart Crown was established in 1999 by Dr. Eric Moon, a former competitor himself. The show moved out of the city in 2000 but now returns following new legislation passed to legalize and sanction mixed martial arts in the State of Illinois. Hurt Clothing visited Tito Ortiz at his book signing in Chicago. We caught up with the former UFC Champion and talked about the rumors of him joining Donald Trump and the Affliction Promotion. Tito Ortiz became friends with The Donald when Tito was a contestant on The Apprentice. MMA Fighter KO's Opponent 120 lbs heavier with a MMA first
It seems that the days of unlimited weight classes and fighting multiple opponents on the same night are not gone. This was common place years ago when Mix Martial Arts (MMA) made its debut in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). Fighters could fight up to 3 times a night on the same card in a tournament style format. And there were no weight classes. This means that a 170lbs fighter could fight someone 50 or 100 pounds more than them in a fight.
On May 10 2008, somewhere in the middle of Illinois, such a fight went down. And with some interesting results.
Tom Gavrilos, Hurt Clothing Advisor(www.hurtclothing.com), owner of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Gear (www.reproots.com) and part time professional MMA fighter, from Tempe Arizona, was thrust into a situation that seemed almost surreal at the time. He had just fought (and won) his welterweight match (170lbs) against Jason Bradford via arm triangle choke just 1min 15 sec into the first round. He was leaving the cage and getting ready to pack it in for the night when the promoter announced over the PA system that there was one more super fight left for the evening. That is when he heard his name called over the loud speaker.
Gavrilos, known for being 'game' for anything crazy, was up to the task that night .However, he didn't realize that his opponent would be the 'Raging Redneck', all six foot five, 290 pounds of him! As the two faced off in the cage, Gavrilos looked up at his beastly opponent.
Tom was cornered by Wes Simms (UFC and MMA fighter) and fighting under the Submissions 101 (www.submissions101.com) fight team.
What happened next was a first in mixed martial arts. Recently, there have been two double knock outs in matches, but there has never been a 6 second knock out via DDT in a match. And certainly not against opponents who weighed 120 pounds apart. But this was the case that night.
The "Raging Red Neck" rushed Tom and slammed him against the cage. It looked like a bear playing with a small child. Then Tom grabbed the Raging Redneck around the head and dropped to the mat. In one swift move, Tom's opponent was knock out instantly via a DDT (a professional wrestling move), only 6 seconds into the match. He remained unconscious for over one minute as trainers and paramedics attended to him.
The Raging Redneck finally came to and got up where he and Tom showed a great amount of respect for one another with the familiar fighters hug inside the cage. The Raging Redneck left the cage under his own power and Tom looks forward to the future and his next adventure in the cage.

Live MMA in Colorado featured the best fighters at Warriors Collide 3. Coming off a decision loss to Nabil Khatib in HCF Crow's Nest, Gideon made sure this was not left up to the judges. Delivering a barrage of Muy Thai Kicks and Elbows, Gideon with full mount delivered the HURT on Bryan Craven to the point where he could not continue. Congratulations to Gideon Ray on his victory.
